I Trusted Their 5-Star Reviews, Then They Shattered My Items

I never imagined that hiring a moving company could turn into one of the most stressful and expensive mistakes of my life. Even today, when I think about what happened during my move from San Jose, California, to Austin, Texas, in June 2025, I still feel the same anger, shock, and helplessness.

It all started when I decided to relocate for a new job opportunity. I had a two-bedroom apartment filled with furniture I had spent years saving up for. I owned a large flat screen television, a solid wood bed frame, two dressers, and several suitcases filled with personal belongings. I knew this was going to be a long-distance move, so I carefully searched online for a moving company. That is when I came across Solomon & Sons Relocation Services.

At first, everything looked perfect. Their website was polished, and the reviews seemed overwhelmingly positive. I remember thinking to myself, “This company looks reliable. Thousands of people cannot be wrong.”

I called them and spoke with a representative. He asked me to provide an inventory list and room details. After discussing everything, he gave me a quote of $3,200. He assured me multiple times that this was a binding estimate based on the inventory I provided.

He said, “Sir, once you sign the agreement and lock your move date, you don’t have to worry about surprise charges. We handle everything professionally.”

That reassurance made me feel confident. I signed the agreement and paid an initial deposit of $850.

On June 18, 2025, the movers arrived late in the afternoon. They were already three hours behind schedule. The crew did not look professional at all. They seemed rushed, careless, and uninterested in answering questions.

One of them handed me paperwork and said, “Sign the Bill of Lading here so we can start loading.”

I noticed the Bill of Lading, but I did not fully understand what it meant at the time. I asked him, “Does this match the estimate we agreed on?”

He replied casually, “Yes, yes. Everything is standard procedure.”

I trusted him and signed.

Almost immediately after signing, their behavior changed. They started saying my inventory list was inaccurate and that I had more items than expected. They began adding extra charges for stairs, long carry distance, packing materials, and fuel surcharges.

Within an hour, they told me the price had jumped from $3,200 to nearly $7,000.

I felt my stomach drop. I said, “How is this possible? I was promised a binding estimate.”

One of the movers said, “Sir, if you don’t agree, we can unload everything right now. But you will still have to pay a cancellation fee.”

At that point, my apartment lease had already ended. I had no choice.

I reluctantly agreed to the new amount just so my belongings could be transported.

What happened next was even worse.

I watched in disbelief as they handled my furniture with complete carelessness. They did not use proper padding or protective wraps. My bed frame was dragged across the pavement. Boxes were thrown inside the truck like they were garbage.

I remember thinking, “Something is very wrong; this does not look like professional moving at all.”

Weeks passed before my belongings finally arrived in Austin. The delivery itself was another nightmare. The driver demanded additional payment before unloading anything.

He told me, “You still owe the balance plus storage and handling fees. Total due is $9,870.”

I was shocked. I said, “This is more than triple the original quote.”

He replied coldly, “If you don’t pay now, your items will go into storage, and you will be charged daily fees.”

I felt completely powerless. I paid because I had no other option.

Then came the most heartbreaking moment.

As they unloaded my belongings, I saw the damage immediately.

My flat screen television was completely destroyed. The internal display was shattered with vertical black lines running across the screen. It was completely unusable.

My bed frame had deep gouges and cracks. The dressers had ripped edges, broken handles, and structural damage. It looked like they had been dragged across rough concrete without any protection.

But the worst part was realizing that five of my suitcases were missing entirely. These contained clothing, personal documents, and sentimental items that could never be replaced.

I felt sick to my stomach.

I immediately filed a damage claim. That is when I learned about what I now call their biggest scam, the insurance coverage trick.

During the booking process, no one ever explained the difference between full value protection and basic liability coverage. No one offered optional insurance upgrades.

Later, when I filed the claim, they told me I was only covered under the basic liability policy, which pays only sixty cents per pound per item.

After weeks of back-and-forth emails, they approved a settlement of only seventy dollars for thousands of dollars’ worth of damage.

Seventy dollars.

And they completely denied compensation for my lost suitcases, claiming they were not covered under the policy.

From the misleading quote to the pressure tactics to the careless handling of belongings, and finally to the useless insurance coverage, everything was intentional.

This experience cost me nearly ten thousand dollars, countless hours of stress, and irreplaceable personal belongings.

Even today, I cannot understand how this company still has positive reviews online.

I wish someone had warned me before I went through this nightmare.

Warning to Other Customers

Always demand a binding written estimate, review the Bill of Lading carefully before signing, and never rely solely on online reviews. Many victims report last minute price increases, poor handling of belongings, and extremely limited insurance payouts. If a mover refuses to clearly explain coverage, adds unexpected charges on moving day, or pressures you to sign quickly, treat it as a major red flag and consider walking away immediately.

Lessons From This Story

This story highlights several important lessons every customer should take seriously:

A low quote means very little unless it is clearly written as a binding estimate in the contract.
Never sign the Bill of Lading or any moving document without reading every detail, because once your belongings are loaded, you lose most of your negotiating power.
Sudden price increases on moving day are one of the most common pressure tactics used when customers have no other options left.
If insurance coverage is not explained clearly during booking, it usually means only minimal liability protection is included.
Careless loading, lack of proper padding, and rushed handling are early warning signs that your belongings are at high risk of damage.
Missing inventory items often occur when movers fail to provide accurate inventory lists and tracking documentation.
Extremely small claim payouts are a major red flag that the company relies on basic coverage rules to avoid real compensation.
Online reviews alone should never be trusted without independently verifying a company’s credentials and complaint history.
