They Charged Me More Without Measuring Anything

I never imagined that moving one room of furniture would turn into one of the most stressful and frustrating experiences of my life. What started as a smooth and professional process quickly turned into what felt like a carefully planned scam.

My move was scheduled for June 18, 2025. I was relocating from Chicago to Naperville and only needed to move furniture from a single bedroom. Nothing complicated. Just a bed, dresser, nightstands, a desk, and a few boxes.

I contacted Illinois Movers Inc after finding them online, and I spoke with their sales representative.

From the very beginning, he was extremely polite and helpful. He explained the entire process clearly and provided a quote based on my inventory list.

He told me, “Based on your items, you’re looking at around 300 cubic feet of space. Your total estimate will be $2,200.” He reassured me several times that the estimate was accurate and that there would be no surprises as long as I did not add extra items.

He sent me the moving estimate and service agreement. Everything looked official.

That was my first mistake.

On moving day, everything changed.

The crew arrived, and immediately their tone was completely different. They barely greeted me. They walked around quickly, looking at my furniture, whispering to each other, then one of them said, "This is more space than estimated."

I was confused. I told them, “But I already provided the full inventory. He confirmed the quote.”

The foreman replied bluntly, “This is at least 400 cubic feet. Your price is going up about $800.”

I was stunned.

I asked how they calculated that number. I expected them to measure something or show me how they determined the space. Instead, they simply wrote numbers on their clipboard.

I asked, “Can you show me how you measured the cubic feet?”

The response was, “We know from experience.”

There was no tape measure, no calculation, and no proof. Just an immediate increase of exactly 100 additional cubic feet.

I started feeling pressured because my furniture was already being prepared for loading, and my lease required me to vacate that day. I was trapped. What choice did I have?

Reluctantly, I agreed because I had no alternative.

They handed me paperwork that listed my items, but did not specify the exact cubic feet used in the truck. The Bill of Lading showed a revised estimate, but there was no detailed breakdown of how they calculated the space. I specifically asked for documentation of the measurements.

I told them, “If I am paying for 400 cubic feet, I want to see how that was determined.”

They ignored the request and continued loading.

The entire situation made me uncomfortable, but I tried to stay calm.

Later, I contacted their operations department to get clarification. That was when I spoke with Ryan. His behavior was shocking.

I explained politely, “I just want the exact measurements showing how my items required 400 cubic feet instead of 300.”

His response was aggressive and dismissive. He said, “We don’t weigh items.”

I was completely confused by that statement. I replied, “I am not asking about weight. I am asking about cubic feet. What does weight have to do with volume?”

He became argumentative and defensive. There was no explanation and no attempt to address my concern.

It became clear they had no intention of providing any evidence.

When my furniture finally arrived at my destination in Naperville, I hoped the nightmare was over. Instead, it got worse.

Before unloading, the movers demanded additional fees. There was no prior notice and no updated invoice. They simply told me I had to pay before they would release my furniture.

I asked, “Where is the invoice for these new charges?”

They could not provide one.

I was helpless, standing there watching my belongings being held until I paid more money. After already paying over $3,000 to move one room of furniture, I had no energy left to argue. I just wanted my things.

The worst part was not even the money. It was the feeling of being manipulated and powerless.

I kept thinking, “How can a company operate like this and face no consequences?”

In the end, I paid over $3,000 to move furniture from a single room. The customer service from their operations team was terrible.

I would never use Illinois Movers Inc again, and I would never recommend them to anyone.

Warning to Other Customers

Always demand written proof of cubic feet measurements before signing the Bill of Lading. Some movers may inflate space requirements on moving day to increase charges. Never agree to price changes without documentation and request a detailed invoice for all fees before delivery.

Lessons From This Story

This story highlights several important lessons every customer should take seriously:

Verbal promises from sales representatives mean nothing unless the terms and pricing are clearly written in the contract.
Sudden price increases on moving day without measurements or proof are a major red flag.
Always demand documented cubic feet or volume calculations before agreeing to additional charges.
The Bill of Lading should clearly show all costs, inventory, and space usage before signing.
Once movers load your belongings, your negotiating power is greatly reduced.
Rude or defensive responses when requesting documentation often indicate a lack of transparency.
Never accept or pay additional delivery fees without a detailed written invoice.
Professional moving companies provide clear communication, proof of charges, and proper documentation at every stage of the move.
